Handling All of Your Dental Needs

Starting dental care at an early age is important for your child. If you are a parent wondering if you are providing proper oral care for your child, call Saline County Children's Dentistry today.

We can further help parents with this problem by contributing health information provided by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry along with answering pertinent questions.

Oral Conscious Sedation

If your child is more anxious, they may need something more than nitrous oxide. When selecting a medication, the dentist will take into consideration your child's anxiety level, his or her ability to cooperate, and the treatment needed.

With oral sedation, sleepiness is part of the process, but your child can be woken immediately and can respond to simple commands. Minor side effects such as nausea or vomiting can occur.

You will receive instruction on whether or not it is appropriate for your child to eat or drink before and after a treatment, and how to monitor and care for them while they recover.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is used for mildly or moderately anxious children. It will help them relax so any treatment can be given in a calm and relaxing manner.

When the nitrous oxide kicks in, the child becomes calm, although he or she is still awake and can speak with our dentist. When the gas is turned off, the effects of sedation will wear off quickly.

Nitrous oxide is always delivered mixed with oxygen. Nitrous oxide machines will stop flowing if oxygen concentration dips, so your child will always be protected.

Dental Emergencies

If your child has a dental emergency, here are some tips on what you can do.

Toothache
Carefully clean around the sore tooth. Use warm salt water to rinse the mouth to remove any food that may be trapped. Do not use aspirin on the tooth or gum area. If you notice facial swelling, apply a cold compress to the area. See a dentist as soon as possible.

Cut or bitten tongue, lip, or cheek
Quickly apply ice to the bruised area. For any bleeding, apply firm pressure with gauze or a cloth. If the bleeding does not stop within 15 minutes, you are best served taking your child to the emergency room.

Broken braces and wires
Only remove a broken brace or wire if it will come out easily. If it is lodged tightly or will be painful to remove, cover any protruding edges with wax, cotton balls, gauze, or chewing gum. DO NOT REMOVE any wire caught in the gums, cheek, or tongue and see a dentist immediately if this is the case. Emergency attention is usually not required for loose or broken appliances that cause no discomfort.

Broken tooth
Rinse the affected area with warm water. Place a cold compress on the injury, and recover any broken fragments. Seek immediate dental attention.

Knocked out permanent tooth
Recover the tooth, making sure to hold it by the crown (top) and not the root end. Rinse the tooth but do not handle it more than necessary. Reinsert the tooth in the socket and hold it in place using a clean piece of gauze or cloth. If the tooth cannot be placed back in properly, carry it in a cup containing milk or water. See a dentist immediately.

Other Emergency Conditions

Possible broken jaw
In case of a severe jaw injury, tie the mouth closed with a towel, tie, or handkerchief and find the nearest emergency room.

Bleeding after a baby tooth falls out
Fold a piece of gauze and place it (tightly) over the bleeding area. Bite down on the gauze for 15 minutes; if bleeding continues, see a dentist.

Cold or canker sores
Over-the-counter medications can provide relief. If sores persist, visit your dentist.
